Delft Mama’s own “Legal Mom,” Marisa Monteiro Borsboom, will be leading the “Legal Mom” column for the Delft Mama Blog. In this column, she and her team will address questions submitted from the community about personal or business legal issues. As an extremely diverse multinational/cultural community, we should expect to see very interesting topics for everyone to consider.
In 2011 I moved to the Netherlands with my husband. The adaptation during the first few months was quite difficult. The Delft Mama group was a key source of support when I got pregnant with my first child away from home and all the connections I had. I now have two beautiful children and have managed to reinvent myself, personally and professionally.
Having been a lawyer with my own law firm in Portugal, it was a struggle to redefine my professional path when I moved to the Netherlands. Nevertheless, since I am a generalist lawyer and mediator, I was able to use my expertise to find new opportunities. I work with corporate and private clients in the Netherlands while still working with my colleagues at my Porto office.
The Netherlands sparked my entrepreneurial spirit and creativity to design a legal service provider that would best serve the interests of my clients. MQM Legal operates as a guide in the legal sphere, creating strategy, assessing risks and bridging with Dutch lawyers in all fields of law. We currently support Arise-nl, an NGO that focuses on domestic violence and we have recently started working with tech start-ups. That said, it is time for me to give back to the community that once gave me so much without asking anything in return.
What started with a simple mistake of reading the name of my company became a caring expression: ‘legal mom’. Although it sounded silly at the beginning, it accurately reflects the philosophy that has guided my professional path. That philosophy also guides my clients and advocates for their best interests. Being a ‘legal mom’ balances the personal, emotional and economic investments for shaping better legal strategies and solutions for each case.
This column intends to address daily life questions that all the Delft mama’s are facing, personally or in their businesses. While preserving your anonymity, my team and I will create useful articles based on your questions. You can contact us by visiting our website and/or by sending a message to my e-mail with the subject: Legal Mom.
